What do I do if water is coming out of my meter box?

First, call the Water Utilities Department (545-4500); You will need to provide your name, address and phone number. A service technician will investigate the leak as soon as possible.

What do I do if I see a water leak?

If it is during normal working hours, call the Water Utilities Department (545-4500). If it is after hours or on holidays or weekends, call the Water Utilities Department and your call will be answered by our answering service. You will need to give the nearest address, your name and phone number. The answering service will then page the on call service technician and they will respond as soon as possible.

Why is the water sometimes dirty or cloudy?

The mineral deposit on the lining of the water main being disrupted causes dirty water. This usually happens while flushing fire hydrants or when there is a main line break. Please be patient. Usually running water in your house fur a few minutes clears the problem up.

Who do I call when I have a question about my bill or new service?

The Billing & Collection Department (545-4050) handles all calls concerning billing questions. The Building and Planning Department (545-4010) will assist with new services.

What do I do if I want the ditch in front of my house piped and covered?

The City will pipe an existing ditch if it is deemed appropriate to do so. The Engineering Department will provide a cost estimate approved by the Water Utilities Field Services Superintendent for time and expense necessary to complete the job. This proposal must be paid in full at City Hall before the work can begin. Open ditches are piped according to the Stormwater Division' s schedule.

What is Potable Water?

Potable water is water that has been treated and made safe for human consumption.

Why does the city flush water fire hydrants?

Flushing of the distributation system is done on an annual basis to rid the system of deposits of iron that accumulate over a gradual period of time. The iron deposits are not harmful to overall water quality.

Is Chlorine in drinking water harmful?

Chlorine is used as the primary disinfectant to destroy diseases causing bacteria. The unreacted chlorine is controlled at the filtration plant and is not harmful in levels normally present in potable water.

After a hurricane, is the city water still safe to drink?

The city water department will provide notification of problems with the drinking water by either written correspondence and or broadcast over local radio if there is the need to boil water, or to use an alternate source of water. There will be no notifications made if no problems exist.

Where does the city's responsibility for water and sewer line maintenance end?

The city's maintenance responsibility ends at the water meter for drinking water service lines and at the beginning of the homeowner's property line for sewer service lines.
