Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a system that captures, stores, analyzes, manages, and presents data in a geospatial form.  The system basically takes different types of data and links it to a particular location.  In a sense, GIS is the merging of cartography and database technology.

Here are some ways we use GIS:

  • Resource Management
  • Environmental Impact Assessment
  • Cartography
  • Urban Planning
  • Criminology

The column on the right side of this page has links to the Georgetown County GIS server and some helpful Maps of the City of Georgetown.
